The many wives of James Wilson.

1.

She had a name of course, but you never say it, not anymore. It's just First Wife. My First Wife. Wife Number One.

You disclose yourself as a serial monogamist when you say it. You don't mind really, because the women you date after your First Wife have a right to know.

You tell them, "I was young," or "We were just too different," and they nod in understanding. We all make mistakes, James.

You don't tell them, "I loved her until I didn't."
You don't tell them, "At the end of the day, I liked him more."
You don't tell them, "She made me choose between my marriage and my best friend."

(You're only sort of ashamed of who you picked.)

2.

Bonnie never drank until you married her.

She was at the kitchen table, fingers wound around the stem of an empty wine glass, the dog sleeping at her feet. She pointed at you and said, "You're late."

She was wearing your sweatshirt when she said, "I want a divorce."

You stood in the hallway with your briefcase and papers tucked underneath your arm. Everything in your home looked deceptively normal; nothing told you when you walked got inside that hey, your wife doesn't want to be your wife anymore.

You said, "But I love you."

She said, "You love everyone. And you know what?

That's the same as loving no one at all."

3.

Julie says, "I can't believe I'm someone's third wife."

She says, "What does that say about me, anyway?"

She's looking at the marriage certificate, then at you, then at House.

"City hall weddings are so romantic," he tells her, and she just grins because the charm hasn't worn off yet.

"Well let's go celebrate," Julie says. "I may be his third, but I'll also be his last."

You laugh, enjoy the feel of her fingers on your thigh under the table.

She whispers, "Your friend is an okay guy."

You think, oh yes, this one is a keeper.

Oh, love for this! You have the wives so much in character and Wilson too. It's short but gorgeous.

"You love everyone. And you know what? That's the same as loving no one at all."

Oh, man! That one really stung. You do a fantastic job bringing all the wives to life, but you absolutely nailed it with Bonnie.

This is gorgeous. And ditto on the love for this line:

"You love everyone. And you know what? That's the same as loving no one at all."

I instantly flashed on a scene in the book "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater," by Kurt Vonnegut, where the terminally compassionate and altruistic Eliot Rosewater is told basically the same thing by his father. Lovely book that I highly recommend.

Thanks for sharing this short, sweet, moving story.

Ooh, I've only read Slaughter House Five as far as Vonnegut novels go, but I'll have to check that out.

TY for the comment; I am glad you liked the fic :)

Very nice, and it manages to be both comprehensive -- in terms of Wilson's travails -- and compact. And a great way to handle the first wife with no name issue.

Ha! Thank you. I considered giving her a name, but it felt more true to the show this way.

Thank you for the nice comment!

This is great.

The last one is my favourite. You get the feeling that Wilson has that feeling of hopefulness every time he starts a relationship, even though they always end the same way.

So very concise and well written.

Cheers, and well done.
AE.

Oh, perfect! You captured that sense of Wilson's multiple wives so well, that feeling from both the sides of the women involved, and from Wilson's as well, that fact that you have lost your identity, who you are is no longer important, you have simply become: wife #X out of however many. And Wilson's guilt that he has allowed it to happen, again, and again, and again...that comes through in the same manner, he's ashamed of having made these individuals into nothing more than past conquests, past lovers, past wives. And they are so different as well, which is lovely to be able to capture in such short sections of dialouge and action. Each of Wilson's wives reflect who he was at that time, the person he was looking for, and the choices that he made. And with Julie she knows what she's getting into, she knows about House and the marriage-killing friendship, she goes into the union knowing full well what's coming down the road.

Really well done! :)
